Last chance: Join Souls to the Polls

You can make an impact from the safety of your own car! Spend a couple of hours of your time with us this Saturday, Oct. 10, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in a traveling voter mobilization initiative to encourage people in low-turnout neighborhoods to vote. Caravans leave from Kansas City Kansas Community College, and glass markers and magnets will be available for those who need them. Sign up today.

Racism and redistricting: How unfair maps impact communities of color

Today, Oct. 8, 6:00 p.m. CDT, join the Leagues of Women Voters of the United States, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia for a discussion on the role systemic racism plays in silencing voters of color and how it has shaped one of the most important processes for ensuring voters' voices are heard. Community leaders will share information on work being done to end some of the most egregious racial gerrymandering in the country — and what is at stake for this election.

Kansans and climate change
More Kansans than ever believe in global warming, according to a Yale survey on climate change. The climate opinion map, which was compiled from survey data from March 2020, shows that 72% of Americans believe global warming is happening. Kansas and Missourians aren't far behind, with slightly more than two thirds of the populations in those states believing in global warming.

National Hispanic Heritage Month events
National Hispanic Heritage Month occurs Sept. 15 through  Oct. 15 each year. Participate in one of three local upcoming events to celebrate the cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans:
  • Tonight, Oct. 8, 6 p.m. on Zoom: "May Our Voices Ring True" - Kansas Poet Laureate Huascar Medina invites viewers to find their voice, share their words, and discover what truly connects us through poetry. Registration is required. Call (913) 831-3359 to register. 
  • Oct. 15, 7-8:30 p.m. online: Attend a virtual screening and discussion of "Borderlands," the third and final episode of the Peabody Award-winning Art in the Twenty-First Century series. Register here.
