DEIMoment-Juneteenth

Two events on Juneteenth

Juneteenth celebrates the emancipation of enslaved peoples in the United States. While the Emancipation Proclamation had outlawed slavery in 1862, enforcement spread unevenly. On June 19, 1865, Union Army general Gordon Granger proclaimed freedom from slavery in Texas, one of the last states to comply with the proclamation. Here are two local options to celebrate this event:

The NAACP of Johnson County and STAND UP for Black Lives+ are hosting a community celebration day from 11 to 4 in Franklin Park. Learn more here.

The Advocacy and Awareness Group of Johnson County, Women of Purpose, and their community partners are hosting the 2nd Annual Advocacy and Awareness Peace March and Rally from 11 to 1. Learn more here.

Advocacy Resources
The state legislative session may be over, but you can still make your voice heard. LWVJoCo now has two videos available with tips for advocating effectively.
Advocacy: Help Needed
We are calling for volunteers to help reboot LWVJoCo's Advocacy Committee! You can help educate members on advocating for League positions, collaborate on opportunities for group advocacy activities, and brainstorm new ways to use our resources to boost member advocacy and advocacy effectiveness. Please email Leslie Mark  if you are interested.

KS Organizations Challenge Election Reforms
The League of Women Voters of Kansas and three other organizations filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the recent election laws voted through by the Kansas Legislature. Read the full article in the Kansas Reflector

Participate in the State Juvenile Justice Update
The committee for the 2021-2022 State Study on Juvenile Justice, responsible for providing a one-year update on this topic, needs committee members. Please contact Ann Zimmerman at Gabrielle Thompson Bailey if you are interested in participating.

 Apply Now: DEI Training
All League members are invited to apply for a training opportunity provided by the national League in partnership with Leaderosity. Program participants will receive complimentary access to a customized training portal that includes two self-led courses on diversity, equity and inclusion, and a discussion board to interact with fellow participations. Affordable Housing News
HB2187, which establishes savings accounts and an associated tax credit for first-time home buyers, was passed by the Kansas legislature and approved by the governor on May 17. The law takes effect July 1, 2021. Read the legislative details here, LWVJoCo's Housing Affordability Position Statement here, and view our recent online discussion on affordable housing here

Help wanted: Hybrid Event Coordinator
LWVJoCo is seeking a volunteer coordinator who can help us incorporate Zoom or other virtual platforms into our in-person events once public health officials indicate it is safe to gather indoors again.
