Volunteers needed!

Over the next three weekends, we need several volunteers to help hand out information on voter registration and the upcoming elections. These events are held in partnership with the Church of the Resurrection, and training is provided. Review all volunteer opportunities using the button below.

June is Pride Month around the world - a time to celebrate the lives and contributions of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) people. It is also a time to learn about the challenges faced by the LGBTQ community and to advocate for a more inclusive community. For example, in Kansas, there is still no law that expressly prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. According to a 2019 report by UCLA's School of Law, 38% of transgender people living in Kansas experience workplace harassment due to their gender identity and have no legal recourse.

On Friday, 6/17, the Kansas Court of Appeals declined to block a 2021 election law that could criminalize voter registration activities by the League and other civic organizations. Read more.

🏛 Legislative update recap
Many thanks to those of you who attended the Legislative recap for Johnson County earlier this month, as well as to our moderator and panelists. We offer a few takeaways below, but be sure to watch the recording on YouTube for the full conversation.
  • Transparency - for example, the "listening sessions" for redistricting gave the appearance of transparency, but were done in such a way as to minimize participation.
  • Regarding misinformation distributed by public officials - it is important to counter disinformation with calm, firm, and reasoned interactions. Voter2Voter is one way to counter misinformation.
  • Public education - there is a faction that is chipping away at the idea that public dollars should fund public schools.
  • Reducing gun violence - we have weakened gun laws over the last decade making it easier to access guns. This needs to be addressed.
  • The LGBTQ community continues to be targeted by the legislature.
🗓 Voter registration ends July 12
Nearly 20% of eligible voters in Kansas are not registered to vote. There's a good chance someone you know isn't registered! Take some time to talk to your family, friends and coworkers to make sure they are registered.

It's super easy to register online in Kansas at KSVotes.org. Anyone who wants to vote in the primary needs to register by July 12, 2022.

✋🏼Become a poll worker!
The Johnson County Election Office is looking for thousands of volunteers to be poll workers ahead of the August primary. Learn more about being a poll worker, qualifications, and how to apply in this Shawnee Mission Post article
