Join us Saturday morning, May 6, at the Sylvester Powell Jr. Community Center for a conversation on local issues, their impact on daily lives, and the benefits of getting involved. 
 
This meeting is open to members and non-members like. Registration is recommended.

All month, we are celebrating our volunteers! League of Women Voters of Johnson County is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization run by volunteers who make our work for voters happen. We could not do it without them. 
International Jazz Day 2023

In this DEI Moment, we celebrate International Jazz Day, established in 2011 by UNESCO to highlight jazz and "its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe."

 
Jazz exemplifies connectedness - musicians communicate, feed off of each other, interact with their audiences, and create in real time. KC jazz can be found in a number of venues, including The Phoenix, The Green Lady Lounge, The Blue Room, The Black Dolphin, The Uptown Lounge, The Black Box, Knucklehead's, The Kauffman Center, Yardley Hall (JCCC) and more. 

 

If you're interested in other ways to celebrate diversity this month, April is also "Celebrate Diversity Month" for some (see Manhattan, KS's declaration and tips for celebrating at nationaltoday.com) and Arab-American Heritage Month (learn more here).

🎓 On education in KS
Thanks to the many engaged attendees who showed up April 1 for our session on school choice! Just one week later, SB83 failed to pass in the Senate before they adjourned on April 7. Some legislature members have vowed to re-raise the issue. If you missed the April 1 session, here are few highlights:
  • Bills that shift funding from public to private schools will destroy rural communities, and legislators are realizing that.
  • Public schools are governed by people in the community. Taxpayer money designated for those public schools should not go to institutions that do not have the same level of local governance.
  • $5k is not enough to get low income students into private schools. 
  • Kansas has some of the most rigorous state assessments in the country, and groups often misinterpret the results. What matters for college is the ACT and Kansas students are doing well on that test. Many states declined during COVID. KS did not.
