Inaugural Program at SMUUCh
We did it! Thank you for making the LWVJoCo inaugural program in our new venue -- Shawnee Mission Unitarian Universalist Church (SMUUCh) -- a great success! Here are some comments shared by our 82 participants:
- The stellar program was stimulating
- It was easy to socialize with old and new friends!
- The coffee and treats were a nice surprise!
September’s Immigration Program
Our sincere appreciation to: Joan Kelly, Jewish Vocational Services, Kim Steinmetz, Johnson County Community College, Mary Sanchez, PBS and Rekha Sharma-Crawford of Sharma-Crawford Attorneys at Law for presenting an impactful program! Here are some takeaways:
- Do you know anyone who was given the choice of where to be born?
- Applying for asylum is a legal step for those seeking to come to America.
- There are multiple entry points into the US, including KCI Airport, but there is no single “waiting line” or “path”.
- A legal permanent resident cannot vote.
Suggested Action Items:
- Contact Congress to urge passage of the bipartisan Afghan Adjustment Act S.2327/H.R. 4627

Field Trip to Jewish Vocational Services
League members are invited to visit the Jewish Vocational Services for an overview of the immigrant resettlement programs and a group volunteer project.10 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, 4600 The Paseo, Kansas City, MO 64110.
Registration is required and space is limited to 30. Bring a friend.
Postcard Parties: Vote Local (see "Voter Information" below to sign up)
Thousands of people who cast their votes in the Aug. 2022 primary did not vote prior to that election or since! The League is sending handwritten postcards to 2,000 voters, urging them to vote local in November. Join us for one of the following Postcard Parties. Come together, visit and work!
Door Knocker Drop and Go (see "Voter Information" below to sign up)
We will be doing a door knocker literature drop urging community members to vote. This does not require engaging homeowners and
residents in conversation. Simply hang the info from their door knobs and move on to the next house! Door knockers can be picked up at our Oct. 7 program. We have lots of ground to cover – literally! Invite friends, children, and grandchildren to join you in this important endeavor to walk the neighborhoods.
The League of Women Voters has been making a difference in Johnson County for 71 years! Let us keep up the good work to vote local in November!

Declaration of Human Rights
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in Paris on Dec. 10, 1948 and was the first document delineating fundamental human rights that require protection. This year, we honor the 75th Anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights, along with the theme, “Equality, Freedom and Justice for All."
