MONTHLY MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENTS

That’s a wrap!

As October comes to a close, so does our 2023 Election Season Activities. And, while we may have just a few more events for October, we can proudly proclaim that our Vote Local! campaign closed with gusto. Take a look!

Voter Registration Teams

We’re so thankful, despite the legal restrictions, for our Voter Registration Team. We engaged the public about the importance of registering to vote, updating voter registration, and voting throughout Johnson and Wyandotte Counties. We staffed tables at high schools, community colleges, churches, libraries, residential facilities, and community celebrations.

Voter Information Teams

We’re so appreciative of our Voter Information Team. We shifted our Candidate Forums to Candidate Meet & Greets that brought out more local candidates and local residents that allowed for more direct conversations between candidates and constituents. We found additional community partners that included professional and student organizations. We reached out to voters who don’t often vote in elections through our literature that we hung on 500 doors as well as personalized postcards to 2,000 voters. Our partners, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. @ Upsilon Rho Omega and Mu Omega Chapters and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, completed 275 postcards in our GOTV (Get Out The Vote) effort.  We reminded them of the importance of voting in local elections.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Our DEI, Voter Registration and Voter Information teams joined together to get more League literature printed in Spanish. Our DEI team led League efforts at an Advocates for Immigrant Rights Event working with bilingual volunteers talking to voters about the importance of local elections.

Two LWVJoCo English-speaking volunteers and sometimes as many as six volunteers (all Spanish speaking) from Advocates for Immigrant Rights And Reconciliation (AIRR) met for two mornings of voter information sharing in Kansas City, Kan. (KCK). The first morning they visited 40 business owners along Central Avenue, most of whom agreed to post the English/Spanish information for “New Voter”,  “Raise Your Voice” and “Why Vote in Local Elections”. We also discussed and handed out many cards to interested people on the street.

The second morning, AIRR had obtained permission from three grocery managers in KCK to stand outside the store, talk with interested people and share voter info in English and Spanish. Our three teams spoke to hundreds of people at the three busy markets with good responses. Parents who were not eligible voters took information for their eligible family members. Eligible voters received the vote411.org information with interest. For those not eligible to vote, we were able to share the cards with safety info about their legal rights on U.S. soil, regardless of documentation status. It was a good partnership project.

Team Spirit

We’re so thankful for all our teams throughout the League. Whether it’s hospitality, technology, communications, membership, DEI, observer corps or programs, we continue to do the League’s work: defending democracy and empowering voters.

Team Effort for SMUUCh Food Pantry

We’ve shown our appreciation through our generous donations to our host's local Food Pantry. After our October meeting, we received word that 100 households had shopped the following Tuesday at the Food Pantry, and with YOUR contributions, everyone’s shopping cart had an EXTRA POUND of food. An Extra Pound! For our November meeting, the Food Pantry requested the following:

Shelf Stable Meats and Seafood (other than tuna)

Continued Success Depends on YOU

Our work is never done. Borrowing from Uncle Sam’s “I need you” advertising campaign, the League needs YOU. We need YOU to help continue League efforts in voter registration, voter information, communications, DEI, hospitality, technology, membership, observer corp and programs. 2024’s Election Season will be fierce and fiery. We need YOU to help us hold the line defending democracy and empowering voters. We need YOU now more than ever as we look towards the 2024 Election Cycle.

So many to thank for such important work!

In addition to the members listed in the table, Voter Registration thanks Board members Deb Kitchin, Marie Hernandez, Nancy Allen, Kay Heley, Harry Bognich, Janet Milkovich, Connie Taylor, Elaine Johnson, and Mary Lou Jaramillo.

As we head into 2024 we want to encourage our LWV JoCo members (and friends!) to consider joining us at future events. It’s fun, it’s worthwhile, and you get to meet a lot of great folks!

DEI MOMENT

DEI Moment: November is Native American Heritage Month

November is the federally recognized Native American Heritage month. According to the US Senate, as early as 1916, there has been observance of a week. It was not until 2008 when this week was expanded to a month and incorporated indigenous people from Alaska and Hawaii. Kansas and Johnson County have had its share of elected officials of Native American descent. In 1907, Charles Curtis served in the US Senate from Kansas and as Vice President under Hoover. Curtis was a descendent of White Plume, a Chief of the Kansa-Kaw Tribe who offered assistance to Lewis and Clark in 1804 during their expedition.

Currently, Kansas has the first female Native American elected to the House of Representatives, Sharice Davids, who represents Kansas’ Third District, which includes Johnson County. She is a member of the Ho-Chunk tribe. Sharice Davids, along with Mary Peltola from Alaska and Kai Kahele from Hawaii, mark the first time that Native Americans from the mainland and the island populations have been in Congress simultaneously.

In 2011, Kansas opened the Native American Affairs Office, Kansas Native American Affairs. The office was created with a primary purpose of ensuring Native American issues and opinions were heard, observed and discussed in official state business.

Action Steps:

  • Visit the Kansas Native American Affairs Office in person or virtually for more information on issues currently discussed in the Kansas Legislature.
  • Visit the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri this month! This is a remembrance of Lewis and Clark’s expedition into the West to learn about the Native American populations whose lives were impacted.
  • Grab a book, or look for more information at National Native American Heritage Month for events, further articles on Native Americans.
  • Visit the Mid-American All Indian Museum in Wichita, Kansas to learn more about the Kansa, Kaw and other indigenous tribes of this region.
  • Learn more about our US Representative, Sharice Davids. Learn about her background, issues and how her identity has led her to being a Native American Woman in elected office. reporting directly to the governor.
