DO YOU KNOW HOW SUPREME COURT JUSTICES ARE SELECTED IN KANSAS?
In August, Kansans will vote on a proposed constitutional amendment that could change how the Kansas Supreme Court is selected. Join the League of Women Voters of Johnson County for an informative community program featuring former Chief Justice of the Kansas Supreme Court Lawton Nuss, who will explain Kansas’s current merit-based appointment system and what the proposed change could mean.
What you’ll learn:

- What the proposed constitutional amendment would change
- Key considerations to help you make an informed decision before you vote.

DEMOCRACY MOVES WITH WOMEN
In 2026, women’s voices are more critical than ever.
Across the United States, decisions about healthcare access, economic stability, education, workplace protections, and access to the ballot are being debated and shaped in real time. In moments like these, civic participation becomes more than a principle; it becomes a responsibility shared by communities across the country.
Women play a central role in that participation. As voters, organizers, community leaders, and advocates, women shape how democracy responds to the realities families and communities face every day...

| Spring has arrived and nature is coming to new life (grass is greening, trees and flowers are blooming). Gardeners are anxious to get outside and work in their gardens, more people are out walking and going to the parks. Our league members have not been dormant through the winter months; we have been active. It’s time though for our league and our members to become more active and involved, especially in this important election year.
One of our league’s main goals is to help citizens to register to vote and particularly to encourage registered voters to vote in every election. The other main goal is to help inform and educate voters on political issues. One example of this is our upcoming April 11 program meeting explaining how the current method of electing and retaining Kansas Supreme Court Justices works, considering the August election contains a proposal to create a constitutional amendment to remove this method. Come and learn about this and bring family, friends, neighbors.
Our new Board of Directors takes office on April 1, and they are ready to get our League energized for this new year.
Much more, you (as a member of LWVJoCo) are an important key to the success of our league. Each of our committees/teams can use your help. If you are on a team, get a bit more active or continue to stay active; if you are not on a team, join one or just help when you can. Each of us is a volunteer so any time and/or money is a help. My thanks to each of you who have given of yourself in any way to help our league. Let’s be creative and renew ourselves to do even better. We have important work to do.
Our State League Council meeting is April 25 in Great Bend, Kansas. You received an email on March 9th titled “2026 LWVK Council Invitation” from LWV of Kansas with information about it and a link to register to attend. Come and meet fellow members of other leagues from across Kansas. Maybe make it a “mini-vacation” and see the sights in that area.

| Important Information about Annual League Membership Dues
We welcome new members to our chapter. The suggested annual League membership fee is $75, but a minimum of $20 may be paid to fit your circumstances. Please go to www.lwv.org. This is the national league's website, which processes all dues. You may renew your annual membership the same way. Renewing members receive email reminder notices 30 and 60 days before their membership expires. At any time, you can check the national site to access your account or create one if you are not yet a League member.
If you need assistance to establish or renew your membership, or just don't feel comfortable with the online process, please come to the check-in table at Saturday meetings, and we will be happy to assist you.
To help us succeed, donations to our Johnson County chapter are most welcome and appreciated in addition to membership fees. Donations in any amount may be made on our website, www.lwvjoco.org. Please look for the donate button.
